Let me just be the first to say that I don't usually experience motion sickness, but the ferry from Ft. Lauderdale to the Grand Bahama Island was nothing short of sickening. Let's just say I spent every waking moment of the ride on the main deck hoping to reach land, while desperately staring out at the horizon trying to ease the nausea.
As soon as we docked in Freeport Harbour, we made our way to our hotel, The Grand Lucayan. Our room had a balcony with a beautiful view of the resort below, as well as the ocean - where the water and the sky met at the horizon. We spent a lot of time at the resort, swimming in the infinity pools, laying on the beach, and watching the sunsets as we ate delicious sushi dinners. One of the native Bahamians even braided part of my hair into tight cornrows.
While my brother took a nap on the beach, my mom and I hopped on a boat to go parasailing along the beach by our resort with some of the other guests and the most pleasant workers. Only one group made it up before the rain came pouring down, and we had to dock the boat to wait out the storm. Fortunately, the rain didn't last long and we were flying sky high shortly after! It was a surreal, yet relaxing moment looking out at the resort and the waters below.
The following day, we took a bus to Paradise Cove, where my brother and I spent several hours admiring the fish while snorkeling in Deadman's Reef. We couldn't get enough, so when it was time to return our snorkeling gear, we swapped it out with a kayak and continued back into the water.
Nearing the end of our tropical Christmas vacation, we enjoyed our last moments, then returned to Freeport Harbour to board the ferry back to Florida. Luckily, the water was much calmer on the way back, but I can indefinitely say that I do not want to travel by ferry ever again!
After arriving in Florida, we visited with our family for a couple of days, as they showed us around their newest hometown of Ft. Lauderdale. Before heading back to Colorado, we drove out to the Everglades to take an airboat tour, where we saw alligators, explored an abandoned house, and even worked hard to loosen the boat after the driver got it stuck between two trees. What an adventure!
